View new restaurants in Newcastle for 2021 here.

Into another decade, and if this one has half as may as the 2010s, Newcastle will be chock full of places to eat – good and bad. Restaurant openings aren’t as rapid as they have been in the past few years, but there’s still plenty going on. For previous years, check out  2019, 2018, 2017, and 2016. And if you’ve anywhere you’d like included here, let me know.

Updated 1/2/2020.

Barrio Comida (Durham) finally reopened following a long absence. This time in a permanent home in Durham, and I’m delighted to say it’s even more brilliant than ever. If somewhere opens up in Newcastle this good this year – I’ll be surprised.

The Ivy is set to take over the Byron site (which is moving, don’t worry Burger fans). It’s one for the posers, though I’ll hold my judgement until I’ve actually been.

Kennedy & Rhind will take over Cal’s Own unit after they move to elsewhere in Jesmond. It’s a collaboration between David Kennedy and his baker pal Murray Rhind, and will be equally as exciting as Cal’s Own new take on pizza…

The Haymarket is another one of those will-they/won’t-they venues that has verb years in the making without any progress. Who knows?

Sweet Patisserie by Emma Carlton promises proper patisserie in Whitley Bay! Already smashing out the award-winning sticky toffee pudding, caneles, jams, and lots of other fabulous looking sweet treats.

The Little Dumpling House popped up in the old Manny’s site and looks to be doing lovely Nan Bei-esque dumplings and things.

Block & Bottle moved to a bigger shop in Heaton — is lovely.

Hen & Hops is some kind of American bar & grill taking over the Nova site.

Zucchini Pasta Bar are expanding fast with a popup at No. 28, as well as a Metrocentre location!

The WC opened in the Big Market toilet. Sounds foul, is actually lovely, a very small private little bar for wine and cocktails.

Dot Bagels opened on Chili Road — homemade bagels with plentiful toppings, great lunch/breakfast/whenevr you fancy a bagel.

FEDs fried chicken is a hot take on…fried chicken from the MeatStack boys.

Redheads Mac & Cheese opened in the Grainger Market (actually September 2019)

See also A Bit on the Side which has been dormant for the longest time and doesn’t look like anything will happen.

Bonded Warehouse in Sunderland called it a day.

Log Fire Pizza Co. have long been working on a Durham site (as well as one in South Shields). Hopefully this years is the one!

The Social Cafe Bar on Ridley Place lives in the old home of Manny’s and is a pizza/sandwich type affair which is a permanent extension of Eatali who started life in Stack.

Hard Rock Cafe (Guildhall) is the least interesting one of all. It’s a Hard Rock Cafe. On the Quayside. If you’re from Newcastle and you go here, you’re mad.

Grate is a cheese specialist which opened in Jesmond, near Papa Ganoush and Dene’s Deli. Good, hard to find cheeses and deli bits. Opened around Oct 2020.

Horticulture opened last year but has been doing good things since then. It’s preminonantly a bar, but with a great kitchen upstairs too. I’ll get round to this one, but think small plates. It’s where Paradiso once lived.

Pink Lane Bakery opened their Gosforth venue following a successful crowdfunding. Yay to more pastries, great cakes and bread.

The Salt Market – is NE29’s own HWKRMRKT/Stack/Boiler Shop type venue. Live music, fish quay, food, all sounds good but christ it’s taking a while to come to fruition.

Full Circle Brewery opened either 2020 or very late 2019 — great addition to the Ouseburn’s lively scene with phenomenal craft beer.

It’s been a tough year for the industry in general, so hopefully not too many of these make it to the list closed Newcastle restaurants, although some unfortunately already have…

If there’s anywhere missing on this list, or if you’re a restaurant/bar that would like to be added, just send me an email and I’ll have a look.
