Jesmond

Unless you’re a student, skip the bars on Osborne Road (mostly awful), instead go for a long walk through Jesmond Dene, and get some scran from one of Jesmond diverse and ever-growing roster of restaurants and cafes. The popular streets of Acorn Road and Brentwood Avenue also have cafes and restaurants come and go fairly quickly, too.

Jesmond isn’t historically a great place to eat, but some cracking spots have been popping up alongside the city centre’s resurgence. Perhaps even more so than Heaton, it’s Newcastle’s studentsville — and there’s plenty of places to accommodate them. A late lunch at The Fat Hippo is a rite of passage for anyone doing their time at Newcastle or Northumbria University, and there’s tons of cafes for your vanilla oat matcha fix.

But Jesmond has more strings to its bow than cheap eats and hangover food. High-end dining at Jesmond Dene House, Lovage, and Branches means the area quietly punches well above its weight. It’s a part of the city that rewards a proper exploration, and taking some time to sort the good from the bad.

So whether you’re after a sit-down dinner, a casual bite, or the best takeaway in the area — here’s where to eat in Jesmond.
