North Tyneside
restaurant reviews
North Tyneside has gone from something of a dead end to one of the best places to eat in the North East. From the banks of the Tyne at North Shields, up the coast through Cullercoats, Tynemouth, and Whitley Bay, it’s an area that is increasingly popular. House prices famously reflect this, and is well worth a short journey from Newcastle city centre.
Seafood, independent cafés, and destination dining with a view reign supreme here. The coastline lends itself to that kind of eating, of course Riley’s Fish Shack is probably the most well-known over the past decade or so. It is sublime, of course.
The Fish Quay at North Shields remains underrepresented given its setting. Tynemouth and Whitley Bay take the lion’s share of the best places to eat, with both towns having developed a genuinely strong independent food scene over the last decade or so, and lots of smaller, truly independent places that I love.
